Cloud Inventory & Cost Optimizer

Cloud inventory and FinOps in one tool

Builds one up-to-date inventory of servers, databases, clusters and disks across many AWS accounts. By cross-referencing inventory, usage metrics, pricing and the actual bill, it reveals the real cost impact of every resource.

Cloud Inventory & Cost Optimizer: Sample report generated from test fixtures; contains no real account data

Sample report generated from test fixtures; contains no real account data

Why we built it

In a company with many AWS accounts, idle servers, previous-generation disks and forgotten snapshots add to the bill every month. Finding them account by account in the console takes days. Cloud Inventory & Cost Optimizer scans every account in one pass and lists the opportunities with numbers.

Features

Multi-account scan

Discovers SSO profiles and scans accounts in parallel, adapting concurrency to AWS rate limits.

Usage, price and bill together

CloudWatch metrics, on-demand list price and Cost Explorer billing on the same row.

Savings opportunities

gp2→gp3 migration, orphaned EBS, idle Elastic IPs, snapshots older than 90 days and idle servers.

Cost insights

Savings Plan/RI coverage, month-end forecast, cost anomalies and Compute Optimizer recommendations.

One source of inventory

EC2, RDS/DocumentDB, EKS, ElastiCache and OpenSearch with type, capacity, tags and owner, in one table searchable across accounts.

Reports and interfaces

Per-account HTML reports, a master dashboard, CSV/Excel export, Streamlit and FastAPI interfaces.

Data flow

  1. Collect

The only step that touches AWS: inventory, metrics, prices and billing are saved as JSON.

  2. Report

Per-account HTML reports are built from local JSON; no AWS session needed.

  3. Combine

A master dashboard and Excel export bring every account into one view.

  4. Publish

Published in-house via S3 and CloudFront, or served live with FastAPI.

Privacy and safety

  • Talks to AWS through read-only APIs
  • Access goes through SSO profiles; no access keys are stored
  • Paid API calls are kept to a minimum and logged

From the field

What Cloud Inventory & Cost Optimizer surfaced once it was in place

Each finding became a Jira task and was resolved.

A multi-account AWS estate

Forgotten disks and old snapshots

Findings

  • Unattached EBS volumes and how many days they had sat idle
  • Snapshots aged by the day, flagged past 90 days
  • The monthly storage cost of each

OutcomeJira tasks went to owners for confirmation; approved items were removed after a backup check.

Cloud InventoryJira

A multi-account AWS estate

Servers stopped for months, still on the bill

Findings

  • How many days each had been stopped
  • The monthly amount still paid for their disks after compute stopped
  • The ones with no clear owner or tags

OutcomeApproved servers were terminated and their disks cleaned up; the saving went into the closing comment with its formula.

Cloud InventoryAI Task SolverJira

A multi-account AWS estate

Over-provisioned RDS storage

Findings

  • The gap between allocated and used storage
  • A suggested size that keeps a safe margin
  • One size down for under-used instances

OutcomeRecommendations were shared with the teams, then planned and resolved through Jira.

Cloud InventoryRDSJira

A multi-account AWS estate

Tag compliance and security hygiene

Findings

  • Resources missing Owner, Environment or CostCenter tags
  • Servers with IMDSv1 enabled, a public IP or unencrypted disks
  • Previous-generation instance types and their current equivalents

OutcomeFindings were ranked by priority and fixes were tracked as Jira tasks.
